Rhett Dashwood spent a lot of his spare times (from October 2008 to April 2009) looking at Google Maps, "hoping to discover land formations or buildings resembling letter forms". And guess what, he found all the letters of English alphabet in the form of land formations and buildings.

He has also linked to Google Maps so that you can see it yourself. These locations are seen within Victoria, Australia.

Such views are very unusual although these are artificially created during spectacular opening ceremonies. In recent past, Beijing Olympic's opening ceremony had such aerial views.

Did you know hitting C on your keyboard when you're on GMail can create a new mail? Did you know you can search your mails with "has:attachment" to search for mails with attachment? Or did you know you can bring Google Calendar into GMail?

GMail Help now sports a new section with powerful tips for Gmail users. Whether you are new to Gmail or experienced Gmail user, this section is definitely a must-check. It has four different levels — White Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt and Gmail Master.
Each level contains useful productivity tips — some of which you probably know. You can also share your own tips by filling out a simple form. The section also offers a PDF version of the tips which is some sort of a cheat-sheet. But since users can submit new tips, a PDF version is not sufficient as there will be more tips to be added in future.

Although it's a very good collection of tips, if you are heavy GMail user, most of these tips are already in your bag. If you have been keeping an eye on Youtube's Gmail channel, most tips are already discussed. Still, for newbies, this is a good place to start using GMail to increase productivity.

Google recently has launched Speed — a campaign to make the web fast — showing the web-developers the "best" practices. With the launch of Page Speed, such a campaign was inevitable. When Yahoo! launched Yslow for firebug, they also babbled about best practices drawing much flak from the developer-community. This time, unfortunately, it's Google who's getting all the blame.

A video on how Google feels to speed up the web.

PHP Worst Practices

The site contains some advise on PHP best practices which claim to significantly speed up PHP scripts. But the PHP team feels otherwise. Looks like Google has either ignored the latest versions of PHP or been lagging behind. To quote the PHP team:

Most of these points may have been true in ancient versions (PHP 3, or very early versions of PHP 4), but they are definitely untrue in modern PHP. The PHP team urges the author of the article to check his facts more carefully, and to investigate where his claims of extra speed are truly coming from (as certain coding patterns, combined with specific PHP settings, can sometimes make some of the above points partially true).

CSS Nightmare

It's pathetic to see how Google advises to write "logical" CSS rather than maintainable CSS. A serious developer can easily tell you which one of the two code blocks is more maintainable.
h1, h2, h3 { font-weight: normal; }
a strong { font-weight: normal !important; }
strong { font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; }
#nav { font-style: italic; }
.note { font-style: italic; }
And this one...
h1, h2, h3, strong { font-weight: normal; }
a strong { font-weight: normal !important; }
strong, #nav, .note { font-style: italic; }
When everyone's talking about maintaining CSS stylesheets, it's horrible to see Google talk like that.

No Such Thing As Best Practice

It's all about personal preferences. Millions of articles are written on "Best Practices" and a lot of them contradict a lot other articles. If it's a best practice for you it can be worst for someone else. Also with the advent of broadband connection, the web has become fast if not blazing fast. Thus, projects like Speed is redundant.

Are you a news-buff? Are you addicted to Twitter? Or you never want to miss the live score updates of cricket matches? If yes, Snaptu is made for you!
Snaptu is a java-based mobile application which adds a new dimension to mobile web-browsing. It is a combination of many different web-applications ranging from Google Calendar to Twitter to AccuWeather. Here's a video on Snaptu covering its breath-taking features.
Snaptu is a perfect application for keeping yourself updated (it has an RSS reader), managing your tasks and meetings (it syncs with Google Calendar), social-networking (it has Facebook and Twitter), getting updates on Soccer and Cricket matches (it fetches updates from CricInfo and Score24Live), getting the latest news (Reuters, BBC and Guardian) and more.

Snaptu has a very sleek black interface, and iPhone-like icons and transition effects. The newest version of Snaptu is faster than the earlier one.
Although not officially in beta, Snaptu regularly adds new features to the application. So, you can expect a lot more in coming days. You can also make feature-requests directly from the application itself.
You can download Snaptu directly to your mobile — just visit the download page and enter your mobile number; Snaptu will send you a URL. You can download the application by visiting that URL. In case you are having troubles downloading this way, you can download the JAR file directly to your PC from GetJar.

I have been using Snaptu for two months now. And it is addictive. Apart from Gravity, there are very few mobile Twitter clients as good as that of Snaptu. Other than an integrated browser Snaptu has it all. Last week, some people on twitter claimed 'Snaptu lets you forget iPhone'. Snaptu is a must-have for your J2ME phone but it is nowhere close to iPhone.

Twitter, as most of you know, is a social-networking and micro-blogging service that asks you one simple question: "What are you doing?" Twitter was launched in 2006 by @jack. And within a span of three years, Twitter has become the most popular micro-blogging service.

Now, how was it born? Or who are the creators? Or what happened since it was launched? Well, you don't have go through history books to find out. Manolith has come with a picture that says it all.
This illustration shows how people used to share updates and messages from UNIX powered machines and how the formation of a micro-blogging platform became inevitable after around 9 years of 'weblogging'. A well-thought-out illustration.

IBM has launched applications for Android-based mobile G1 and for Java-enabled phones that get you all the updates from Wimbledon as it happens there. Packed with a super-cool location-aware visualisation technology, Seer Android, as they call it, gives you real-time stats from Twitter. It also gives you comments from the players. Here's a demo.

The amazing feature is, of course, its location-aware technology taking advantage of the GPS of G1. Not only news about Wimbledon, if you are new at Wimbledon, it gives you direction and transport instruction for reaching the venues with easy-to-use maps.

Even if you don't own a G1 or an iPhone, IBM has an app that runs on most of the java enabled phones — IBM Seer. Just go to www.wimbledon.org/ibm/ and download it directly to your phone.

FriendOrFollow is Twitter-based web-app that tracks who's is following you and who's not. If you follow (or have started following) a lot of people on Twitter and you think they'd follow you back, FriendOrFollow keeps a tab on them.

It has a very simple interface, easy to navigate. There are three tabs.
Under the 'following' tab, you'd find those you are following. Nothing new since the same functionality is provided by Twitter too. But the next two tabs are interesting — fans and friends. 'Fans' tab contains those users who follow you but you don't follow them. Under the 'friends' tab you'd find those users who follow you and whom you follow too.

The interesting thing about FriendOrFollow interface is that the background of the page changes with individual user and it's the same background the user has set in twitter settings.

Given the rise of various start-ups and pro-bloggers in Twitter who start following others (with a hope that the users will follow back, and thereby increasing popularity), FriendOrFollow is a good tool.

Designing for IE can be the biggest problem a developer faces. Among its various quirky bugs is the inability to center a div with margin:0 auto;. Here's a workaround I found.

Suppose you have layout like this:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>Some title</title>
</head>
<body>
<div id='container'>
<!-- All your content goes here -->
</div>
</body>
</html>

Now, we are to position the #container to the center of the screen (whatever be the resolution of the monitor). To do so, we add a style tag and set text-align:center for body, i.e.
body {
 text-align:center;
}
This centers all the texts, divs, spans etc. This way the #container is also positioned to the center of the screen. But the problem remains as all the texts are centered which means the child elements of #container will also be centered. Our design certainly doesn't require us to center all elements. So, to cancel the centering of all child elements of #container, we add:
#container {
 width:960px; /* Variable width; can be anything */
 text-align:left;
 margin:0 auto;
}
Done! The above code resets the alignment of texts (and divs, spans etc.) to the left which is the default for all browsers.

With 1.5 million books under its belt, Google has renovated Google Books — recently in news for introducing Gadgets. The new version of Google Books adds an array of new features aimed at improving interactivity.

Embed 'Books' in your webpage

Just like embedding YouTube videos, Google Books now offers snippets of HTML that can be embedded in your webpage.
What's more, it embeds only a single page of the entire book. Thus, your readers won't have to go insane finding what you are talking about.

View the contents quickly

Now, you can quickly view the contents of the book as a drop-down menu while going through the book. A very handy feature for huge books.

Thumbnail Views

Google Book now offers thumbnail views for books. That is, every page of a book (or a magazine) is shown as small thumbnails clicking which takes you to the specific pages. Looks nice and easy to navigate.

Easy 'Next page' navigation with animation

While navigating from page to page, you can now click on the 'page turn' area available at the footer area of the page. Click on the page turn and the next page comes with an animation.

View the pages in plain text

If you have a slow connection, Google Books' ajaxy interface and high-graphics page may further slow down browsing. Google Books has made it simpler by introducing plain text browsing. Plain text pages rendered as HTML. It comes handy for VI users using Text-To-Speech applications.

In this tutorial we are going to create a Flash-like rollover effect with the help of CSS and jQuery.

TECHNIQUE

For this rollover effect, I have used the CSS technique discussed in CSS Decorative Gallery in Web Designers Wall.
The next image gives a little overview of what we are going to do.

We are going to create a list element for each photo. Within this list element, there is a link containing an image and a span tag. The span tag further contains another image. The image within the span tag is the image which is shown to the user 'by default' and when the user rolls over the link, the image within the link will fade in. That is to say the span completely covers the image and when the user rolls over, the span tag fades out.

THE LAYOUT

We create an index.html file and put the following codes in it:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>Amazing rollover with jQuery</title>
<style type='text/css'>
html, body, div, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, ul, ol, dl, li, dt, dd, p, blockquote,
pre, form, fieldset, table, th, td { margin: 0; padding: 0; }

body {
font-size: 14px;
line-height:1.3em;
}

a, a:visited {
outline:none;
}

.clear {
clear:both;
}

#wrapper {
 width:480px;
 margin:auto;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id='wrapper'>
<ul class='photo-list'>
 <li>
  <a href='#'>
   <img src='images/screen1.png'/>
   <span><img src='images/teaser.png'/></span>
  </a>
 </li>
 <li>
  <a href='#'>
   <img src='images/screen2.png'/>
   <span><img src='images/teaser.png'/></span>
  </a>
 </li>
 <li>
  <a href='#'>
   <img src='images/screen3.png'/>
   <span><img src='images/teaser.png'/></span>
  </a>
 </li>
 <li>
  <a href='#'>
   <img src='images/screen4.png'/>
   <span><img src='images/teaser.png'/></span>
  </a>
 </li>
</ul>
</div>

</body>
</html>
The images within the links are all 210px by 210px photos which I have taken randomly from Flickr's WebDesign Pool. [See the demo for links to individual pages.]

STYLE THE IMAGES

Now that we have the skeleton, we move on to style it with CSS.

First we style the list elements. To remove the bullets, put the following code within the <style> tag of your index.html
ul.photo-list {
 list-style:none;
}
Since all our images are 210x210 pixels, we set the height and width of each list element to 210px each. Also, we align the list elements side by side by float:left
ul.photo-list li {
 width:210px;
 height:210px;
 float:left;
 margin:10px;
}
Next, we add the following css to style the links within each list element. (i.e. the <a> tags.)
ul.photo-list li a {
 display:block;
 position:relative;
}
Notice, we have set position:relative.

Now, we add the following css styles.
ul.photo-list li a img {
 position:absolute;
 z-index:1;
}

ul.photo-list li span {
 display:block;
 height: 210px;
 width: 210px;
 position:absolute;
 z-index:2;
}
Notice that the positions of both the image and the span tag are set to absolute. This is important. Also, the z-index of image is 1 and that of the span is 2. This is to stack the span over the image.

Now, if you view the page in your browser, you'd notice that the teaser.png image has fully covered the screenshots.

BRING IN THE ANIMATION

Next, we add the jquery library within the head tag.
<script type='text/javascript' src='jquery.pack.js'></script>
For the fade-in and fade-out effect, add the following code within the head tag.
<script type='text/javascript'>
$(function(){
 $(".photo-list a").hover(function(){
  $(this).children("span").fadeOut();
 }, function(){
  $(this).children("span").fadeIn();
 })
});
</script>
This is simple. When the user hovers over the link, the above bit of code fades out the span tag and when the user moves away from the link, the span tag fades in. Simple!

And that's all!

CONCLUSION

This is, as usual, a simple mock-up of how things work. Play with it. Try to improve it. :)

Microsoft has announced that Internet Explorer will not be bundled with Windows7 for European customers. This comes as a result of the legal tussle between the European Commission and Microsoft in which Microsoft had to pay a record amount of $794 million. It is still not clear whether Microsoft will bundle some other browser or whether it will be browser-free.

MS had other alternatives, as Dave Heiner, MS's deputy general counsel and vice-president, says. The Commission offered MS to let the users choose their browser of choice during the set-up. But folks at Microsoft "don't believe it would be best for us to adopt such an approach unilaterally."

Now, it's up to the users to have their say. Firefox is an obvious choice. But given the popularity of Safari 4 and Opera's new turbo feature, Firefox may not be the first choice for European users.

Just when the Mozilla team announced that the next Firefox (version 3.5) is going to be the fastest Firefox till date, the Opera Desktop team released Opera 10 Beta. It comes with some incredible features. Among them is Opera Turbo, which speeds up browsing up by connecting to Opera proxy server and compressing images and data before it reaches the browser. Turbo is indeed a speed booster for slower connections. (I tested it with my sluggish Airtel Mobile Office and it did save a lot of data and boosted the speed.)

Opera 10 beta 1 comes with a speed dial feature which was first introduced in Opera 9.2 (thanks to 'think'), allowing you to quickly browse bookmarked pages through thumbnails. Also among new features are online spelling checker, visual tabs, auto-update, etc. The following video shows some of the features.

Firefox users always have an edge, thanks to Add-ons. The following are some add-ons that let you experience Opera 10's features in Firefox 3.*

FoxTab

FoxTab is a popular add-on that "brings innovative and attractive 3D tab management to Firefox". Once installed, just hit ALT+TAB to activate it. It has five layouts — all of these gives a 3D experience. What's more, FoxTab allows you grouping of tabs according to tab titles. It has also a Fullscreen and Search utility.

FasterFox

[Screenshot courtesy: Softpedia]
Although you can manually tweak Firefox settings to speed up the browser, FasterFox does the same without letting you change the configurations yourself. Since FasterFox is an experimental it has some hiccups. Still it's worth installing.

Fast Dial

Opera's Speed Dial is nothing but a rebranded version of FastDial. (Update: I was wrong on that. Speed Dial was introduced in Opera 9.2, much before FastDial) Once installed, just visit about:blank page and start adding your bookmarks including thumbnails. It is easy to access: just click on the FastDial icon beside the address-bar and it shows up. FastDial is a Userlogos product and they offer thumbnails (or logos) for FastDial bookmarks. You can even change the background of FastDial: right-click, go to preferences, then the page tab and change the background.
FastDial also offers an in-the-page Google search.
